IDENTITY AS A FRAME OF REFERENCE Identity is a theme that artists have addressed throughout history. It is presently a characteristic emphasized in postmodernism, and it includes identity shaped by globalization in what is now termed post-postmodernism. This exhibition focuses on how artists from the United States view identity. There is no one approach to visualizing identity. It can be depicted as a concrete and representational image, or it can be an abstract entity. Whatever an artist addresses in a visualization of identity is rooted in experience based on one's personal biography and personal history. These artists address the existential question: Who am I? In a global environment, it helps others to understand us as national and cultural others. Moreover, it stimulates a discussion of who we are and who others are as human beings in the human condition.
