2017 Meta Journey

Definitions of “meta” and “journey” are important to understanding the theme of this exhibition. “Meta” is defined as: “a prefix added to the name of a subject and designating another subject that analyzes the original one but at a more abstract, higher level: metaphilosophy; metalinguistics.”1 “Journey” is defined as: “An act of traveling from one place to another…A long and often difficult process of personal change and development.”2 Those two terms together define the theme of this exhibition. What does “meta journey” mean in everyday life? We all take journeys when we move through space, whether these be physical or psychic. Life is a journey. Everyday is a journey. However, we seldom stop to think about the meaning of the journey – the “meta” component of a journey. It is the meta journey part of life that is the part of life that makes existence meaningful. We live life in stages from youth through old age -- a gestalt journey, so to speak. But the liminal space that lies between “here” and “there” is the essence of life. These can be micro journeys or macro journeys. We need to reflect on these journeys to understand the sacred in the mundane. This exhibition is about art that focuses on the following question: What is the journey of a journey? Therein lies what we see and experience as “the profound” in everyday life.
